VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DESERT

You can make a difference!

Have you ever thought about what you can do to help conserve desert wildlife?

Volunteer and be the change that you wish to see in the world. SCBS volunteers are a diverse group of people who share one core value: the desire to help desert wildlife thrive and to make a tangible difference. Become part of a “boots on the ground” workforce for nature, and be the difference. And remember - when we provide enough water to sustain the Bighorn, we provide benefits for many other species as well.

What we do

SCBS volunteers work directly with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, both independently or as a team with a variety of on-location projects. In an effort to improve Bighorn habitat and populations, the Society supports:
  • Development and maintenance of water resources for Bighorn Sheep.
  • Research into causes of declining bighorn populations.
  • Cooperative projects with state and federal agencies in sheep population surveys and related research.
  • Preservation or restoration of bighorn sheep habitat.
  • Preservation of each bighorn sheep population to maintain genetic diversity.
  • Reintroduction of bighorn sheep into historic bighorn ranges.

How we do it

SCBS volunteers travel with their own vehicles, hike, or use a combination of both means to the remote desert ranges where the elusive Bighorn dwell. Therefore, if you enjoy offroading and hiking in desert backcountry, you can join our organization to make a positive impact while having fun doing the things you love.

SCBS has a variety of active programs throughout the year. Some programs only need a few individuals, while other programs warrant the recruitment of a large group for 1-3 days. You can decide which project is right for you.

Most projects are announced and recruited by using email communications. Therefore, if you would like to be informed of upcoming volunteer opportunities, SCBS requests you provide both your email address and telephone number. Your privacy is respected; SCBS will not share your information with other organizations.

Membership with SCBS is not required of volunteers, but it definitely helps our mission to make a meaningful impact. Add your name to the SCBS volunteer list using the button below.

Society for the conservation of bighorn sheep -
Helping to keep desert bighorn sheep on the mountains since 1964

The Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep (SCBS) is a California registered, non-profit organization founded in 1964 and dedicated to the conservation and management of the desert bighorn sheep.

SCBS has had the longest record of working to restore our desert Bighorn in California. Our ongoing programs with state and federal agencies have had a dramatic and positive effect on the resource.

SCBS is the oldest non-profit conservation organization working to help keep sheep on the mountain.

For over 60 years SCBS has contributed immeasurably to the comeback of this magnificent animal by raising funds and public awareness, seeking grants and financing studies, installing waterholes and wildlife drinkers, improving and enhancing habitat, and spearheading a translocation program to return the Bighorn to its historic ranges in the California desert.

This restoration effort was undertaken by SCBS in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under Memorandums of Understanding and in accordance with the CDFW's Bighorn Management Plan.

Statistics reflect the success of these endeavors. Currently the Bighorn has been restored to approximately fifty percent of its former habitat, and its population has increased by eighty percent.

Water Monitoring Overview

WATER MONITORING

Many of the water developments that SCBS has created are “replacement” water, that is, the original water source has become unavailable to sheep due to ground water depletion, human occupation, development, or other avenues of encroachment.  Because the sheep are fully dependent on some of these water sources it is imperative that we never let them run dry.  In many instances, the sheep populations has grown beyond that envisioned when the systems were constructed forcing us to haul water by truck to these sites to keep them filled during the hot summer months.  We have installed remote monitoring stations that utilize modern electronics and satellite communications to keep us informed of the amount of water in the tanks without having to dispatch a volunteer to visit the site.  Several of the newest systems also provide us with rainfall data which can indicate the collection efficiency of the system.  Currently, SCBS has two brands of monitoring station, Stevens and Automata.  The following charts are some examples of the data provided from these systems.

Update: We no longer have any Stevens systems, their satellite coverage became too unreliable for our needs. We currently have 16 Automata/McCrometer systems. A log in is required to view data; please contact a board member for a user name and password.
